Caskets Made Of Ivory

Caskets Made Of Ivory

Ivory caskets are ornate containers crafted from the tusks of elephants or other ivory-bearing animals. These caskets were popular in the medieval period and were often used to store precious items such as jewelry, relics, or important documents. Ivory caskets were highly prized for their intricate carvings and delicate details, which were often enhanced with gold or silver accents. The process of creating an ivory casket was a time-consuming and labor-intensive task that required great skill and attention to detail. The ivory was first carefully selected for its quality and size, and then cut into the desired shape. The surface of the ivory was then smoothed and polished to create a smooth, even finish. Once the ivory was prepared, the casket was carved with intricate designs and patterns. These designs often included scenes from the Bible or other religious texts, as well as depictions of mythical creatures, animals, and plants. The carvings were often enhanced with gold or silver accents, which added to the casket's beauty and value. Ivory caskets were highly prized by the wealthy and powerful, and were often given as gifts or used to display wealth and status. However, the use of ivory in casket-making has become controversial in recent years due to the impact of ivory trade on elephant populations. As a result, the use of ivory in casket-making is now highly regulated or prohibited in many countries.
