Capsules
The word capsules, derived from Latin capsula, is a small container designed to contain a discrete quantity of medication, nutritional supplement or other substance. Historically, the containers have been composed of a variety of materials, such as paper, aluminium, plastic and glass. The evolution of the term can be traced to 16th century French and Italian, and is likely related to the Latin word for small box, or chest. From an etymological perspective, the term is a hybrid of two Latin words, “caput” (head) and “saccus” (sac). From a morphological standpoint, the term is composed of two morphemes, a prefix “cap-” and a suffix “-ule”. From a pragmatic perspective, the word has its usage in the modern day, referring to a variety of contexts such as packaging, botany, and pharmacology.
