Cannabis Walls House
Cannabis Walls House is an innovative eco-residential project situated on the Carmel Mountain facing the Mediterranean Sea, exemplifying sustainable architecture through its pioneering use of hemp-based construction materials. This groundbreaking private residence, designed by Tav Group and recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, represents a harmonious blend of environmental consciousness and architectural innovation. The structure features 60-centimeter-thick ground floor walls constructed from local stone excavated on-site, while the upper floors utilize hempcrete - a revolutionary composite material combining hemp hurds and hydraulic lime cast on a renewable wood frame. The 250-square-meter dwelling, set on approximately 1,000 square meters of land, incorporates passive design principles for optimal climate control, including strategic positioning for natural ventilation and thermal regulation. The house's innovative infrastructure systems encompass greywater purification and reuse, rainwater harvesting via an underground cistern, composting toilets, and solar energy generation. The design philosophy emphasizes minimal ecological impact while maximizing integration with the natural landscape, evidenced by its terraced layout that follows the hillside topography. Interior spaces feature rammed earth walls and natural lime-based plasters, contributing to the building's thermal mass and environmental performance. As Israel's first hempcrete house, this project overcame significant regulatory and technical challenges, demonstrating the viability of alternative construction methods and establishing new precedents for sustainable residential architecture.
