C 39 Sofa

C 39 Sofa

C 39 Sofa is an innovative furniture design that reimagines the aesthetic and functional properties of pharmaceutical capsules in seating form, created by Canadian designer Yongwook Seong. This transformative piece represents a unique morphological study translating the visual language of medicine into functional furniture, featuring a partially dissected capsule-like exterior that reveals its internal composition. The sofa's structure, measuring 2400mm in width, 850mm in depth, and 900mm in height, is crafted from semi-transparent polycarbonate and anodized aluminum, creating a distinctive shell that houses post-consumer recycled fiber particles functioning as cushioning elements. The design's conceptual foundation draws inspiration from the dual nature of medicinal capsules, incorporating both their striking visual appeal and functional aspects into a piece of furniture that offers a novel seating experience. When users interact with the C 39 Sofa, they experience a partial encapsulation effect, engaging physically with the exposed interior particles in a manner that challenges traditional furniture design paradigms. This groundbreaking approach to furniture design, which was developed between June 2015 and February 2017 across Canadian locations including Banff and Vancouver, earned recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, acknowledging its innovative material application and unique user experience. The design successfully addresses the challenge of maintaining visual integrity as a pill while creating an ergonomic seating solution, representing a significant contribution to transgressive design that bridges the gap between functional furniture and conceptual art.
