Burt Gillett

Burt Gillett was an influential figure in the early days of animation, known for his innovative and surrealistic style. He began his career as a story and film editor at the Bray Studios in New York, where he quickly rose through the ranks and began directing his own cartoons. In 1925, he moved to California and began working for Walt Disney, where he directed a string of successful shorts, including the iconic Skeleton Dance. Gillett's animation style was highly innovative for its time, incorporating elements of surrealism and lyrical storytelling that set his work apart from his contemporaries. He was also known for his technical innovations, such as his use of multiplane cameras and synchronized sound, which helped to push the boundaries of what was possible in animation. Despite his success, Gillett's career was not without its challenges. He clashed with Disney over creative differences and eventually left the studio to work for other animation studios, including Van Beuren Studios and MGM. However, his legacy as a pioneering animator and director remains, and his contributions to the art of animation continue to be celebrated today.
