Brilliant Olive Glass Tableware

Brilliant Olive Glass Tableware is an award-winning collection of hand-crafted Japanese Kiriko cut glass vessels that employs traditional glass-cutting techniques to create a symbolic representation of olive branches, leaves, and fruits across functional drinkware and serving pieces. Designed by Keiji Ishikawa and developed for KJ studio between August 2024 and January 2025 in Tokushima, Japan, this tableware series encompasses sake glasses measuring 60mm in diameter and 70mm in height, wine glasses at 58mm diameter and 150mm height, sake cups at 60mm diameter and 60mm height, rock glasses at 77mm diameter and 92mm height, and plates measuring 150mm in diameter and 33mm in height. The design draws inspiration from the serene olive groves of Shodoshima, a region renowned for olive cultivation in Japan, where olive trees have historically symbolized peace, wisdom, and prosperity across cultures from ancient times to the contemporary era. The collection features a distinctive double-layered glass construction that is meticulously ground and polished by hand using specialized Japanese Kiriko cut glass technology, incorporating custom-ordered wide-angle V-cut grinding wheels that enable the creation of intricate olive leaf patterns. The design methodology presents olive branches with pairs of leaves arranged alternately in a spiral pattern that evokes organic growth, with certain leaf configurations resembling heart shapes to represent warmth and tranquility, while gradient-colored olives add visual depth and reflect what the designer characterizes as humble intelligence. The leaves and fruits are arranged in a jigsaw puzzle-like configuration that enhances their visual dynamism when light passes through the glass, creating a shimmering effect that mimics living olive foliage. From a lateral viewing angle, the wide-angle V-cut olive leaf pattern creates a complex, mesmerizing design where the pattern on the reverse side overlaps with the front surface, generating an intricate visual interplay that evokes biological complexity. When beverages are poured into the vessels and viewed from above, the inner olive leaf patterns reflect and interact with one another, producing a multifaceted, luminous design that appears to bring the olive leaves to life through optical effects. The production process required the development of specialized cutting wheels for rendering olive leaves and implementing wide wheels to express the gradient qualities of the olives, necessitating precise adjustment of the contact point between wheel and glass during the cutting process, with advanced techniques proving essential when working with darker glass that presents visibility challenges. The design represents a contemporary interpretation of traditional Japanese glass-cutting artistry, merging centuries-old Kiriko techniques with original design concepts that aim to enrich daily life through functional art objects. Brilliant Olive Glass Tableware received the Silver A' Design Award in 2025 within the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware and Cookware Design category, one of the world's most prestigious design competitions, where the Silver designation recognizes top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation, acknowledging creations that are both aesthetically compelling and highly functional while reflecting deep understanding and skill. The award recognition validates the design's contribution to raising industry standards and advancing design practice through original innovations that elicit strong emotional responses and make notable impacts on the improvement of everyday life. The collection demonstrates how traditional craft techniques can be revitalized through contemporary design thinking, preserving cultural heritage while creating objects that resonate with modern sensibilities. The design is currently applying for design registration and copyright protection in registered designs, expected to be granted in December 2025 in Japan, ensuring intellectual property protection for this innovative approach to glass tableware. The work exemplifies how symbolic natural elements can be translated into functional objects that serve both practical and aesthetic purposes, transforming the act of dining and drinking into an experience that connects users with cultural symbolism and natural beauty. The technical achievement of creating such intricate patterns through hand-grinding and polishing represents a significant advancement in the application of Kiriko techniques to contemporary tableware design, demonstrating how traditional craftsmanship can be adapted to express new design vocabularies while maintaining the integrity and precision that characterize Japanese glass-cutting traditions.
