Boris Lurie

Boris Lurie was a Latvian-American artist, writer, and Holocaust survivor who played a significant role in shaping the art scene of the 20th century. Lurie's work often reflected his personal experiences, including his time in concentration camps during World War II. He was one of the founders of the NO!art movement, which rejected the commercialization of art and instead focused on expressing raw emotions and social commentary through their work. Lurie's art was characterized by its provocative nature, often featuring explicit or disturbing imagery juxtaposed with text and graffiti. Throughout his career, Lurie remained committed to using his art as a means of addressing social and political issues. He was a vocal critic of the Vietnam War and was involved in various activist groups throughout his life. Lurie's work was also heavily influenced by his interest in literature and philosophy, and he often incorporated text from these sources into his art. Despite his controversial subject matter, Lurie's work has been widely exhibited and is included in the collections of many major museums. He continued to create art until his death in 2008, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering figure in the world of contemporary art.
