Benjamin Patterson

Benjamin Patterson was an American artist who was a key figure in the Fluxus movement, a group of avant-garde artists who sought to challenge traditional art forms and blur the boundaries between art and everyday life. Patterson's work was characterized by its playful and irreverent approach to art-making, as well as its incorporation of music and performance. Patterson's early works were influenced by his training as a musician, and he often incorporated musical elements into his art. One of his most famous works, Paper Piece (1960), involved the tearing and crumpling of sheets of paper, creating a percussive sound that was reminiscent of a musical composition. Patterson also created a number of performance pieces that involved audience participation, such as Variations for Double-Bass (1961), in which he invited audience members to play his instrument. In addition to his work as an artist, Patterson was also an influential educator and curator. He taught at a number of institutions, including the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln in Germany, and curated a number of exhibitions on Fluxus and other avant-garde movements. Throughout his career, Patterson remained committed to the ideals of Fluxus, which emphasized the importance of experimentation, collaboration, and the rejection of traditional artistic hierarchies. His work continues to inspire artists today, and his legacy as a pioneering figure in the world of avant-garde art is secure.
