55 Residence Corridor Library

55 Residence Corridor Library

55 Residence Corridor Library is an innovative architectural intervention that transforms a residential corridor into a multifunctional library space, exemplifying efficient space utilization in contemporary urban living. Designed by Chih-Lang Chiu and completed in 2018, this project ingeniously addresses the challenge of creating a dedicated reading space within the spatial constraints of a 140-square-meter apartment in Hsinchu, Taiwan. The design features a sophisticated arrangement of modular bookcases crafted from 18mm birch plywood, extending along a 600-centimeter corridor with a width of 130 centimeters and a height of 330 centimeters. The installation's distinctive characteristics include sloping upper panels that extend to the ceiling, integrating seamlessly with strategically placed spotlights to create dramatic light and shadow effects. The natural wood finish and repetitive block alignment visually expand the corridor's dimensions while providing substantial storage and display capacity for books. This design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional innovation in transforming transitional spaces into functional areas that enhance the residential experience through thoughtful material selection, lighting design, and spatial planning.
