2 Oaks House Single Family House is an exemplary contemporary residential architecture project that masterfully integrates natural elements with modern design principles, situated in a low-rise residential area near Sofia, Bulgaria, at the foothills of Mountain Vitosha. This innovative 475-square-meter dwelling, completed in 2013, is distinguished by its unique architectural approach that preserves and incorporates two mature oak trees as central elements of its design composition, creating a harmonious fusion between built environment and nature. The structure features a distinctive U-shaped layout at ground level, encompassing an open-plan living space that includes kitchen, dining, and living areas, all fully glazed with sliding elements that can transform the interior into a covered terrace during warmer months. The upper level houses two bedrooms, a master bedroom, and a compact office space, designed to provide an immersive experience among the tree canopies through extensive glazing and wooden deck features. The building's environmental consciousness is evident in its sophisticated energy management systems, including a geothermal heat pump with deep boreholes, triple gas-filled glazing with superior thermal properties, and substantial glass-wool insulation. The preserved oak trees serve a dual purpose, providing natural shading during summer months while allowing beneficial solar gain during winter when leaves have fallen. The project, which won a Silver A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, exemplifies excellence in sustainable architecture through its integration of building automation systems, controlled ventilation with heat recovery, and the thoughtful consideration of passive solar principles, all while maintaining a striking aesthetic inspired by folded paper forms.
