Aka Honn Japanese Charcoal Grill Store is an innovative interior design project that exemplifies the seamless integration of traditional Japanese architectural principles with contemporary spatial solutions, completed in 2019 in an urban setting. The 400-square-meter establishment represents a significant achievement in commercial interior design, particularly notable for its ingenious response to challenging site conditions through the implementation of a central atrium patio that serves as both a functional and aesthetic cornerstone. The design, conceived by Cao Ming, Lu Shuhan, and Wang Xiao, demonstrates exceptional spatial organization by incorporating semi-closed segments that maintain flow while delineating distinct functional areas, accommodating 120 dining seats and a 15-person bar area. The project's sophisticated approach to environmental control is evidenced by its innovative lower air exhaust system integrated within the overhead floor structure, effectively managing the technical requirements of charcoal grilling while preserving the space's serene atmosphere. The interior's material palette emphasizes natural elements, featuring stone and wood applications that enhance the tactile experience and reinforce the authentic Japanese aesthetic. This thoughtful design solution, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, successfully creates an introspective sanctuary amid urban chaos by closing off external windows and focusing inward, drawing inspiration from Tadao Ando's Azuma House while maintaining its own distinct identity through careful attention to lighting, circulation, and spatial hierarchy.
