Soundview Ferry Terminal

Soundview Ferry Terminal is an innovative architectural complex that seamlessly integrates public transportation, commercial spaces, and community gathering areas along the waterfront in Soundview, Bronx, New York City. The distinguished design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, features three interconnected building volumes that create an intimate semi-enclosed courtyard for outdoor markets and public events. The ground level incorporates a 100-square-meter ferry waiting room, 600-square-meter warehouse space, and 380-square-meter events and administrative areas, while the upper level houses 4 commercial incubators totaling 475 square meters, additional warehouse space, and extensive communal areas. The design draws inspiration from the atmospheric urban landscapes depicted in Emile Zola's The Belly of Paris, translating the intimate character of historical Parisian markets into a contemporary context. The complex employs innovative structural solutions, including cantilevered upper levels supported by fanning columns and a space frame structure, to achieve its distinctive form. The terminal's design facilitates fluid movement between indoor and outdoor spaces, with two strategic ground-level passageways directing flow between the market, waterfront, and ferry dock. The upper levels feature naturally lit, interconnected spaces dedicated to small business incubation, particularly focusing on restaurant industry entrepreneurs. This mixed-use development successfully addresses the challenge of incorporating diverse programmatic elements while maximizing its waterfront location, creating a dynamic hub that serves both commuter needs and community engagement through its thoughtful integration of transit infrastructure, commercial spaces, and public gathering areas.
