Brieven Piazza Public Square

Brieven Piazza Public Square is an innovative architectural landscape design that masterfully fuses Mondrian-style abstraction with traditional Square Kufic calligraphy, creating a unique public space that bridges Western minimalism and Islamic artistic heritage. The design, conceived and executed by Egyptian architect Dalia Sadany, represents a groundbreaking approach to public space design through its sophisticated integration of seemingly contradictory design philosophies. The square features a complex multi-layered composition incorporating underground sculptural elements visible through reinforced triple-layered security glass, complemented by strategically distributed green grass rectangles that occupy half the area of each glass sculpture. This arrangement pays homage to Mondrian's interpretation of nature while maintaining geometric precision. The above-ground elements include abstract forms derived from Arabic Kufic letters, chosen specifically for their geometric qualities and lack of ornamentation, creating a harmonious dialogue between cubist layout principles and traditional calligraphic art. The project, which earned the Silver A' Design Award in the Landscape Planning and Garden Design category, demonstrates exceptional innovation in public space design through its successful amalgamation of impressionism and abstraction with cultural elements. The piazza's design philosophy extends beyond mere aesthetic considerations, incorporating functional aspects such as public seating and strolling spaces within its abstract landscape. The project's development, spanning from June 2013 to March 2014, involved extensive research into the integration of diverse artistic traditions, resulting in a public space that challenges conventional design boundaries while maintaining cultural authenticity and functional practicality.
