Bernd And Hilla Becher

Bernd and Hilla Becher were a German photographer duo renowned for their extensive and systematic documentation of industrial structures, primarily in Europe and North America, from the 1950s to the 1990s. Born in 1931 and 1934 respectively, Bernd and Hilla met at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where they both studied photography. Their shared fascination with the aesthetic qualities of industrial architecture led them to embark on a lifelong collaboration, creating a comprehensive visual record of disappearing industrial landscapes. The Bechers' distinctive style, characterized by black and white photographs of individual structures shot from a frontal perspective under overcast skies, emphasized the formal qualities and typological similarities of their subjects. Their rigorous approach, which involved systematically cataloging structures by type, function, and region, elevated their work beyond mere documentation to a form of conceptual art. The Bechers' influence extended beyond the realm of photography, as they mentored a generation of German photographers at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, including Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, and Candida Höfer, who became known as the Düsseldorf School of Photography. The couple's work has been widely exhibited and collected by major museums worldwide, and they were awarded the Erasmus Prize in 2002 for their contributions to European culture. Bernd Becher passed away in 2007, and Hilla Becher in 2015, leaving behind an unparalleled visual legacy that continues to shape the way we perceive and appreciate industrial architecture.
