Max Pechstein

Max Pechstein (1881-1955) was a German painter and printmaker, a prominent figure in the German Expressionist movement. Born in Zwickau, Saxony, Pechstein studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts before becoming a member of the groundbreaking artist group Die Brücke (The Bridge) in 1906. This group, which included Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, sought to break free from traditional academic conventions and create a new, emotionally charged art that emphasized intense colors, simplified forms, and bold brushstrokes. Pechstein's early works, influenced by the vibrant palette of the French Fauves and the primitive art he encountered during his travels to the South Seas, often depicted landscapes, nudes, and scenes of everyday life with a raw, expressive energy. In 1912, he left Die Brücke due to creative differences but continued to develop his distinctive style, characterized by thick, gestural outlines, flat planes of color, and a sense of rhythmic vitality. Throughout his career, Pechstein experimented with various media, including painting, woodcuts, lithographs, and ceramics, and his subjects ranged from portraits and still lifes to religious and mythological themes. Despite facing persecution during the Nazi regime, which labeled his art as degenerate, Pechstein remained committed to his artistic vision and continued to work until his death in 1955, leaving a significant legacy as one of the pioneers of German Expressionism.
