Artscape Residential is an award-winning interior design project that exemplifies the synthesis of American classical aesthetics with contemporary spatial planning principles, developed to accommodate the complex living requirements of a six-member multigenerational household within a 336-square-meter residential apartment in Taoyuan, Taiwan, completed in February 2020 after a two-year design and construction process. Designed by Li Huei Wang of JT Design, Artscape Residential addresses the fundamental challenge of reconciling divergent aesthetic preferences within a single domestic environment, specifically balancing the homeowners' appreciation for classical elegance and rich visual presentation with younger family members' expectations for simplified, contemporary elements, resulting in a hybrid spatial vocabulary that integrates Eastern and Western design traditions. The project employs an open-plan configuration for public areas, strategically positioning private sleeping quarters at opposing ends of the narrow floor plan while establishing a central family core area that functions as the primary zone for collective interaction and shared activities, reflecting the household's strong emphasis on familial cohesion and communal living patterns. The entrance sequence establishes the design's visual identity through marble inlay graphics and mirrored wall panels framed by decorative line plates, creating a formal threshold that mediates between exterior and interior realms while addressing structural challenges posed by low ceiling beams through the strategic deployment of classical wire plates and reflective surfaces that simultaneously diminish the beam's visual prominence and enhance perceived spatial volume. Throughout the interior, engineered wood flooring in sea island wood finish provides thermal and tactile warmth, contrasting with architectural elements including Roman columns, a functioning fireplace, and hand-painted wallcoverings that collectively articulate the American classical style's characteristic grandeur while incorporating Eastern-influenced textile patterns and furnishings such as round stools to generate a diversified spatial experience that transcends singular stylistic categorization. The design addresses the technical challenge of insufficient natural illumination in the dining area, which lacks direct window access, through the installation of wall-mounted mirrors that amplify available light through reflection while simultaneously expanding visual spatial perception, demonstrating the project's integration of functional problem-solving with aesthetic objectives. A distinctive long table positioned between living and dining zones serves as the spatial and social centerpiece of the family core area, facilitating simultaneous occupation by all household members engaged in diverse activities while maintaining visual and acoustic connection, thereby supporting the family's preference for proximate independence over isolated privacy. The project's resolution of the prominent ceiling beam traversing the public area through the design of a classical foyer element exemplifies the strategic deployment of historical architectural vocabulary to address contemporary spatial constraints, as the foyer not only conceals structural irregularities but also maintains original ceiling heights to prevent spatial compression while establishing functional and visual separation between adjacent zones.
