Bank Of England Photography

Bank of England Photography is an innovative photographic documentation project that captures the intricate details and artistic elements of British currency through sophisticated macro photography techniques. This comprehensive visual exploration, created by Creative Director Matteo Ruisi in collaboration with photographer Lee Funnell, employs advanced photographic methodologies to showcase the complex security features, historical characters, and aesthetic sophistication of monetary design. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Photography and Photo Manipulation Design category, utilizes state-of-the-art equipment including a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV camera with an EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens to achieve unprecedented levels of detail and artistic composition. The photography is systematically organized into three distinct categories: group compositions, detailed examinations, and abstract interpretations, each offering unique perspectives on the currency's design elements. Through careful manipulation of shallow depth of field and strategic backlighting against black material, the project successfully navigates the complex regulatory requirements governing currency reproduction while creating visually compelling imagery. The technical specifications demonstrate professional excellence, with high-resolution captures at 6720 x 4480 dimensions, utilizing precise ISO 100 settings and carefully calculated exposure times to ensure optimal image quality. The project's execution spanned from May 2020 to February 2022, encompassing comprehensive documentation of various denominations and incorporating both still photography and slow-motion videography, all produced within a specialized studio environment that enabled meticulous control over lighting and composition.
