Between doors and walls Residential Apartment is an innovative residential interior design project that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional Chinese landscape painting principles with contemporary architectural elements. Located at the intersection of urban and natural landscapes, this 235-square-meter apartment masterfully creates multiple layers of space, light, and shadow through the strategic placement of walls and doors. The design, conceived by Lien-Wu Chen and Yu-Zhi Huang, divides the space into three distinct areas connected by circular movement patterns, facilitating smooth air and light flow throughout. The project addresses several architectural challenges, including the integration of two main columns within a combined unit, through the creation of a sophisticated foyer and reading area. The design philosophy draws inspiration from traditional Chinese landscape painting concepts, incorporating elements that encourage strolling, viewing, touring, and staying. Materials such as stone, wood, steel, and glass are thoughtfully integrated to complement the architectural framework, while personal art collections are strategically positioned at the terminus of each space, seamlessly incorporating artistic elements into daily life. The project, completed in 2013 in Taipei, Taiwan, received the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category for its exceptional approach to spatial design and cultural integration. The design successfully transforms potential spatial constraints into aesthetic advantages, creating a sophisticated living environment that balances functionality with artistic expression, while maintaining a subtle oriental landscape aesthetic that extends from the interior to the exterior views.
