Barro Lamp is an innovative lighting fixture that masterfully combines traditional Mexican craftsmanship with contemporary design aesthetics, exemplifying the harmonious fusion of ancient techniques and modern functionality. This pendant lamp, designed by Caterina Moretti, consists of two primary elements: a cylindrical clay structure crafted by artisans from San Bartolo Coyotepec, renowned for their mastery of Barro Negro (black clay) since pre-Columbian times, and a blown-glass dome that serves both as protection and a light diffuser. The design, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category, showcases the rich cultural heritage of Oaxaca through its materials and production methods. Available in two distinct variations - red clay with a transparent shade and black clay with a gray shade - the lamp measures 165 mm in diameter and 350 mm in height. The creation process involves traditional clay-working techniques, including hand-burnishing with smooth stones and a specialized firing process known as reduction of atmospheres, which produces the characteristic iridescent sheen in the black clay version. The glass dome, crafted by local artisans, features a textured surface that filters light elegantly, creating an ambient illumination that honors both functional necessity and aesthetic beauty. The lamp represents a significant achievement in contemporary lighting design, pushing the boundaries of traditional materials while preserving and celebrating ancestral crafting techniques.
