Balhae Character Design is a significant digital art project that reimagines and resurrects the cultural heritage of the ancient kingdom of Balhae through character conceptualization and storytelling. Created by California-based character concept designer Ziwan Li, this comprehensive design series, completed in Los Angeles during January 2022, masterfully blends historical research with fantasy elements to bring to life the rich tapestry of Balhae civilization, which flourished until 926 CE. The project centers on the narrative of apprentice Junghyae and her mentor, Master Yoo, who are summoned to Gyeru village to address supernatural occurrences affecting local mermaid hunting practices. Through meticulous attention to detail and extensive research into neighboring societies including the Tang Dynasty, Khitans, Koguryo, Paekche, and Silla, the designer has created authentic character representations that bridge the gap between historical accuracy and creative interpretation. The artwork, executed using pencil sketches and digital rendering techniques in Procreate and Photoshop CC, features multiple character designs including detailed traveling outfits, ritual garments, and mythical creatures, all rendered at 300 dpi in 127 cm × 127 cm format. This innovative approach to cultural preservation through digital artistry has earned recognition from the A' Design Award competition, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in the Digital Art category, acknowledging its contribution to both digital art and cultural heritage preservation.
