Black Spruce Residence is an award-winning residential interior design project that exemplifies sophisticated minimalism and industrial aesthetics within a compact 56.1-square-meter apartment space. Designed by Yi Hsien Chiang and completed in 2024, this innovative dwelling transforms spatial limitations into opportunities for creating a sanctuary of relaxation and comfort. The design philosophy centers on the deliberate use of dark-colored building materials, particularly matte stucco, which creates an enveloping atmosphere reminiscent of a black spruce forest. The project's distinctive features include a carefully curated material palette comprising rusty mikado quartz, champagne-colored mosaic, steel-brushed wood veneer, and moru glass, all working in harmony to achieve a refined industrial aesthetic while maintaining warmth and sophistication. Through intelligent space planning, the original two-bedroom layout was reconfigured to better accommodate the client's lifestyle needs, incorporating dedicated areas for coffee preparation, cooking, and music appreciation. The design successfully addresses the challenges of limited space through meticulous attention to ergonomics and circulation, utilizing innovative solutions such as ceiling-mounted equipment and strategic wall fittings. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional achievement in balancing aesthetic appeal with functional requirements, particularly in its dual approach of 'enveloping' and 'penetrating' spatial concepts that create both comfort and visual connectivity throughout the residence.
