Black Monolithic Wall Residential House

Black Monolithic Wall Residential House is an innovative residential architecture project located in a quiet Tokyo neighborhood, distinguished by its striking sculptural black boundary wall and sophisticated spatial design. This Silver A' Design Award-winning structure masterfully addresses the challenges of a narrow, flag-shaped plot through its ingenious three-layered composition and integration of Japanese architectural principles. The residence encompasses 114.60 square meters of total floor area distributed across three floors, with the first floor partially submerged below ground level to maximize spatial efficiency while adhering to strict local building regulations. The design's most distinctive feature is its monolithic black wall, which serves both aesthetic and functional purposes, incorporating essential elements such as stairs, meter box, mailbox, and lighting while creating a compelling approach sequence to the second-floor entrance. The interior architecture demonstrates remarkable spatial innovation, featuring a central void that extends from the second-floor guest area to the third-floor dining space, while the semi-basement first floor houses private quarters including a master bedroom, studio, and a thoughtfully designed bathroom with a tsubo-niwa (traditional Japanese courtyard garden). The structure employs a wooden framework above ground and concrete below, with special waterproofing treatment for the subterranean portion, achieving ceiling heights of 3600mm in the dining area and 2900mm in bedrooms. This architectural solution not only maximizes the potential of its challenging site constraints but also creates a harmonious balance between contemporary design aesthetics and functional living spaces, exemplifying innovative residential architecture that responds sensitively to urban spatial limitations while maintaining high standards of living comfort.
