Bent Wood Cajon Traditional Craft Musical Instrument is an innovative percussion instrument that represents a groundbreaking evolution in the design and craftsmanship of traditional cajons, distinguished by its unique oval-shaped construction and advanced bentwood techniques. This masterfully crafted musical instrument, designed by Hsu Chung-Miao, features a revolutionary capsule-shaped body formed from a single piece of birch and walnut wood, employing sophisticated wood bending methods that not only showcase the artisanal craftsmanship but also enhance the instrument's acoustic properties. The distinctive oval shape, a departure from conventional rectangular cajons, produces sharper and louder tones, significantly expanding the instrument's sonic palette and performance capabilities. The manufacturing process involves meticulous manual cutting, fine polishing, and a natural wood burning technique for coloration, while the internal string configuration has been specially calibrated to optimize sound production. This percussion instrument, measuring 300mm in width and depth, with a height of 470mm, represents a harmonious fusion of Taiwanese traditional craft heritage with contemporary musical instrument design. The project, which was developed between May 2015 and July 2016, has garnered international recognition, including an Iron A' Design Award in the Musical Instruments Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to preserving traditional bentwood craftsmanship while advancing the possibilities of percussion instrument design. The instrument's significance extends beyond its musical functionality, serving as a cultural bridge that helps preserve and promote the endangered art of bentwood crafting, which has been an integral part of Taiwanese cultural heritage for generations.
