Manhattan Beach Residence Single Family Residence

Manhattan Beach Residence Single Family Residence is an exemplary architectural achievement that embodies the quintessential California lifestyle through its innovative design and seamless integration with the natural environment. Completed in December 2014, this 600-square-meter residence masterfully maximizes its downslope lot positioning while creating an harmonious balance between indoor and outdoor living spaces. The design philosophy draws significant inspiration from the Japanese concept of Tsuboniwa (petit garden), incorporating private meditation spaces and internal gardens that open to the sky, particularly within the master suite. The residence's architectural language is characterized by its sophisticated use of floor-to-ceiling European mahogany lift and slide doors, which facilitate a complete opening of the interior spaces to the exterior environment. Distinctive mahogany wood beams guide visitors from a pivoting front door through to a rear oasis, creating a compelling visual narrative throughout the space. The project's material palette, featuring integral colored exterior plaster and an elevated deck system, reinforces its contemporary aesthetic while maintaining warmth and accessibility. The design successfully addresses the challenge of creating a modern home that embraces openness while ensuring privacy through strategic placement of hidden window treatments and thoughtful landscaping. This architectural work, recognized with an Iron A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2019, represents a sophisticated response to the demands of modern family living while creating an oasis-like retreat from urban life. The residence's design excellence is evident in its careful consideration of spatial harmony, technological integration, and environmental impact, making it a notable example of contemporary residential architecture that prioritizes both functionality and aesthetic refinement.
