Bastion

Bastion is a term used in military architecture and fortification design, referring to a projecting part of a fortification built at an angle to the line of a wall, allowing defensive fire in several directions. It is typically a four-sided structure, consisting of two faces and two flanks, with the faces forming a salient angle pointing outward from the main enclosure. The design of the bastion evolved during the 16th century in response to the increasing use of gunpowder and cannon in warfare. The angled faces of the bastion eliminated the dead space or dead zone in front of the curtain wall, which was a vulnerability in medieval fortifications. By allowing defenders to cover the adjacent walls and ditches with fire from the flanks, bastions significantly improved the defensive capabilities of fortifications. The use of bastions spread rapidly throughout Europe, leading to the development of the star fort design, which became the dominant form of fortification until the 19th century. Bastions also played a crucial role in the development of the trace italienne or Italian style of fortification, which emphasized low, thick walls, ditches, and outworks to create a layered defense system. The design principles embodied in the bastion continue to influence military architecture and defensive planning to this day.
