Max Beckmann

Max Beckmann was a German painter, draftsman, and printmaker, who is best known as a key representative of the New Objectivity movement. He is one of the most important Expressionists of the 20th century, and his works offer an insight into the psychological and sociopolitical makeup of Germany during and after World War I. Beckmann's works are largely allegorical and symbolic in nature, incorporating themes of displacement, suffering, and exile. Notable paintings by Max Beckmann include 'Self-Portrait with Horn' (1938), 'Departure' (1932–1933) and 'Lion Tamer' (1941). He also created several triptychs that are considered to be masterpieces of modern art, among them the 'Departure' triptych (1932–1933).
